Abstract
La faiblesse du multiculturalisme au Québec provient du fait que des groupes intellectuels et politiques, qui ont été plutôt favorables à une politique québécoise relativement généreuse en matière d’accommodement de la diversité culturelle et religieuse, se sont retournés contre elle et ont laissé le champ libre à des voix conservatrices qui avaient jusque-là été tenues en échec. Ainsi, l’adhésion à la laïcité à la française, qui caractérise l’actuel discours des nationalistes civiques, et la vision que les progressistes ont des groupes multiculturels, surtout des groupes religieux, comme réactionnaires et hostiles aux droits individuels de leurs membres, ont fait en sorte que ces deux groupes sont devenus les alliés objectifs des nationalistes plus réactionnaires contre lesquels ils s’étaient auparavant érigés en rempart.
