Abstract
This paper probes into the causes of the suffering figures of Bernard Malamud’s The Assistant from angles such as Jewish culture, history, and society. Through the analysis of the suffering figures in The Assistant, we find that the Jews don’t suffer for themselves but the whole human beings. Hence, the suffering figures in his fictions not only have the feature of jewishness but also universally symbolic meaning. A travers l’analyse de cette figure souffrante, nous trouvons que Bernard Malamud ecrit un theme de souffrance. Le peuple juif, bouc emissaire de l’histoire, souffrissent en effet pour toute la humanite. Le theme de souffrance est continuellement enrichi et developpe dans l’oeuvre de Bernard Malamud. En apprenant aux juifs americain comment ils peuvent se sauver avec leur propre croyance religieuse, Malamud propose la delivrance des non-juifs.
