Doppelbrechende Materialien zeichnen sich durch unterschiedliche Brechungsindizes in zwei Raumrichtungen aus und sind aus linear- und nichtlinear-optischen Anwendungen nicht mehr wegzudenken. In ihrer Zuschrift auf S. 8960 ff. stellen D. B. Leznoff und Mitarbeiter Koordinationspolymere als neuartige stark doppelbrechende Materialien vor (Δn>0.39). Die Ansicht der Polymerstruktur durch einen Kristall aus dem kommerziell eingesetzten Calcit (Δn=0.17) illustriert das Phänomen der Doppelbrechung.
