Abstract
A amamentação é um comportamento humano complexo que contribui para a diminuição dos índices de morbidade e mortalidade infantil. Pesquisas recentes vêm sendo realizadas, focalizando a vivência da amamentação sob o ponto de vista da nutriz e estão demonstrando que essa experiência é, muitas vezes, dolorosa, tanto física quanto psicologicamente. O profissional de saúde precisa estar preparado para cuidar dessas nutrizes, o que inclui a habilidade para comunicar-se. Neste artigo, apresenta-se a comunicação centrada na pessoa: princípios e elementos constitutivos. Usá-la adequadamente evita efeitos deletérios e iatrogênicos aos seres humanos, e, no caso, à nutriz.
