L'adolescence et le début de l'âge adulte sont les deux périodes de la vie où le taux de délinquance est le plus élevé, mais les statistiques n'indiquent pas si ce sont les mêmes personnes qui sont responsables de ces taux. L'hypothèse d'une délinquance limitée à l'adolescence est testée dans deux études longitudinales réalisées, d'une part, sur un échantillon de jeunes représentatifs de la population générale d'une zone urbaine et, d'autre part, sur un échantillon représentatif des jeunes contrevenants placés en institution. Loin de confirmer l'arrêt majoritaire de la délinquance à l'issue de la période adolescente, cette étude met en évidence, chez la plupart des sujets, une continuité de la délinquance. Cette continuité s'avère d'autant plus probable que le jeune s'est rendu coupable de délits variés, s'il a été victimise et s'il a consommé précocement de la drogue. L'abandon des conduites illicites arrivera, le cas échéant, plus tardivement, non en raison d'un changement de statut, mais en raison d'une prise de responsabilités affectives et sociales.
