Interaction of SOF/sub 2/ with alumina and zeolite 4A: a comparative study

Abstract
The interaction of SOF/sub 2/ in SF/sub 6/ buffer gas with alumina and zeolite 4A was investigated through adsorption experiments. The SOF/sub 2/ species is completely adsorbed by alumina after a few days of exposure, while most SOF/sub 2/ remains in the gas phase for zeolite 4A during a similar period. This important difference of behavior towards SOF/sub 2/ is explained with respect to the diffusion process involved and the interaction sites available on the adsorbent. Moreover, the nature of adsorption sites (acidic, basic) present on the adsorbent and/or its initial moisture content apparently play a significant role in the hydrolysis of SOF/sub 2/ into SO/sub 2/. Considerations based on surface properties are used to explain the phenomena observed.
