Abstract
Abstract Christianity in the United States is anything but a united whole. Jews, Muslims, and advocates of other religions or no religion may look from a distance at Christianity and speak of it as one faith, in the awareness that there may be basic distinctions within it, such as that between Protestants and Catholics. Yet they will see from listings in telephone books or church advertisements in newspapers what the Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches – which lists well over 200 denominations – indicates: that the “whole” of Christianity is divided into hundreds of denominational parts.
