L’article porte sur la manière dont des enseignants et enseignantes d’histoire et de sciences participent à la construction d’un sujet autonome, caractéristique de la modernité dite contemporaine. Les changements survenus dans les sociétés occidentales depuis la seconde moitié du XXe siècle ont influencé les modes de socialisation des différentes institutions, dont celui de l’école qui, en tant qu’institution participante à la construction du lien social, se voit interpellée différemment dans la manière d’assumer sa mission d’éducation. Après avoir rappelé quelques fondements à caractère philosophique et sociologique de la modernité, l’auteur discute, sur la base de témoignages d’enseignants recueillis dans le cadre d’une recherche en cours, de la manière dont ceux-ci tiennent compte de la pensée des élèves dans l’accès aux savoirs scolaires qui sont des objets de la culture, contribuant ainsi à la construction de leur identité personnelle et à leur insertion dans la société. Ce parti pris en faveur de l’autonomie et de la liberté intellectuelle, morale et personnelle des élèves, vu comme l’indice d’une transformation dans la manière de contribuer au lien social, doit toutefois pouvoir bénéficier de l’assentiment des enseignants.
