Remontant à Platon et à Thucydide, l’auteure rappelle que la dialectique de l’histoire de la musique met en cause à la fois la résistance des traditionalistes et la poussée des modernistes. Elle cite des textes anciens sur Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Berlioz et Stravinski, dont l’analogie avec les attaques d’aujourd'hui contre les modernes est évidente. Elle démontre que ce scénario récurrent met en cause, à toutes les époques, le chromatisme, le rythme brisé, la matière sonore et la forme nouvelle, la complexité des compositions, l’inaudibilité, la virtuosité, la technique et l’hermétisme. Elle souligne que ce qui est en cause, en fait, c’est la différence entre la bonne et la mauvaise musique.
