Les importants gisements d’hydrocarbures découverts au large des côtes du Brésil sont sur le point de bouleverser la stratégie énergétique du géant sud-américain. Depuis trois décennies, les Brésiliens ont fait en sorte de promouvoir les énergies renouvelables au détriment des énergies fossiles. Avec les nouvelles réserves de l’Atlantique Sud, le pétrole et le gaz ont repris de l’importance aux yeux des autorités brésiliennes, à un moment décisif pour leur pays qui s’affirme de manière toujours plus importante sur la scène internationale. L’énergie, dans sa globalité, s’est convertie en un instrument diplomatique à part entière. Cet article propose d’analyser les enjeux et les défis pour le Brésil de la découverte de ces gisements, aussi bien sur le plan intérieur qu’international.
