Abstract
In May 2009, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics published a study on the modulation of heart rate variability (HRV) by lumbar spinal manipulation.1 In this letter, we would like to raise several issues with this study. We argue that it cannot be concluded that lumbar spinal manipulation affects HRV or that the response of the autonomic nervous system may be specific to its effectors organs based on that study. Rather, we suggest that the reported results reflect nonspecific effects that were not measured or controlled for.
