Abstract
Marguerite de Navarre, à l’époque où elle n’est encore que duchesse d’Alençon, a entretenu une correspondance nourrie et suivie, de 1521 à 1524, avec son confesseur de l’époque, Guillaume Briçonnet. Cet article étudie la persona de l’épistolière dans cet échange de lettres où, contre toute attente, puisqu’à la même époque Érasme théorise pour la première fois le genre de la lettre familière dans son De conscribendis epistolis (1522), on ne trouve rien de proprement subjectif au sens moderne du terme. En réalité, ces lettres de confession se situent aux antipodes de ce qu’un certain anticléricalisme aimerait imaginer comme étant les secrets inavouables du confessionnal. En fait, conformément à la philosophie augustinienne dont elle est fortement imprégnée, la future reine de Navarre cherche plutôt à abolir sa propre subjectivité dans la volonté divine. La correspondance avec Guillaume Briçonnet se place tout entière dans le sillage de l’autobiographie augustinienne, dont la visée ne serait pas tant la déclinaison du « moi » qu’un effort tendu vers sa pure et simple négation, voire sa dissolution dans un « je » universel, celui des psaumes bibliques.
