Au contraire de la théorie littéraire, la théorie pragmatique considère que le contexte ne précède pas le discours, mais l'accompagne; qu'il est en fait construit ou reconstruit dans et par l'acte de communication. Une analyse pragmatique de Trou de mémoire d'Hubert Aquin et du Nez qui voque de Réjean Ducharme permet de montrer l'interdépendance des présupposés du lecteur et des conventions textuelles dans la création d'un contexte à la fois social et littéraire pour la lecture des textes. Dans ces romans de la Révolution tranquille, le conflit entre le présupposé d'un idéal de la cohérence et une réalité ressentie comme incohérente (incohérence qui caractérise tant le texte que le monde fictif) contribue à révéler la situation coloniale du Québec et à créer un nouveau contexte favorisant l'émergence d'une identité cohérente et authentique.
