Abstract
Le Windigo appartient à la mythologie des peuples Algonquins qui se représentent cette créature géante sous les traits d’une femme séductrice dont le coeur est fait de glace. C’est aussi de cette façon que les premiers voyageurs européens des terres boréales se sont représentés l’esprit du « Nord » qui séduisait les hommes perdus dans l’immensité blanche en même temps qu’il les précipitait dans la folie. Dans les travaux de psychiatrie transculturelle, le Windigo a été classiquement présenté comme un culture-bound syndrome spécifique aux populations sub-arctiques du Canada. Parmi les symptômes signalés, on retrouve la conviction chez la personne d’être possédée par l’esprit Windigo, la crainte d’être dévorée ou d’être transformée en un « esprit du froid » et d’errer à jamais dans les solitudes du « nord » ainsi que le désir compulsif de manger de la chair humaine. Tous ces symptômes sont évoqués dans les chants que les shamans amérindiens ont inventé en l’honneur de Windigo. L’auteur montre que les romanciers anglo-canadiens (notamment Margaret Atwood) ont fait du Windigo un symbole pour penser l’identité canadienne.
