Abstract
Recognizing the positive effects of inward foreign direct investment (FDI), many countries in the world have strengthened the role of investment promotion agencies (IPAs), improved related laws and institutions, and raised investment incentives in order to enhance the attractiveness of host countries. On the other hand, regional agreements through free trade agreements (FTAs) are spreading quickly all over the world. The main purpose of this article is to analyze the effect of regional agreements through FTAs on inward FDI in host countries. To this end, this article has investigated existing literature and carried out case studies of the US-Canada and the US-Mexico FTAs. Results showed that FTA gave positive effects on the inward FDI. An important policy implication is thus that the government has to improve investment environments and build differentiated FDI strategies, considering the development stage of the host country's economy.
