Abstract
Ce texte vise à cerner certains des enjeux du discours actuel sur la diversité. Notre première piste de recherche est que la valorisation de l’éclectisme et du cosmopolitisme culturels, que nous appelons plus précisément l’ouverture ostentatoire à la diversité, s’inscrit dans un univers discursif plus large, fondé sur un ensemble hiérarchisé d’oppositions dont les manifestations traversent l’ensemble de la vie sociale : ce qui est différent, ouvert, éclectique, cosmopolite, branché et donc désirable se trouve opposé à l’unitaire, à l’homogène, au fermé, au rétrograde et donc à l’indésirable. Notre deuxième piste de recherche est que l’accentuation symbolique de ces oppositions produit dans différents champs des effets remarquablement similaires. Dans l’univers du goût, l’ouverture ostentatoire à la diversité fonctionne comme capital culturel, au sens bourdieusien d’un trait culturel largement reconnu comme désirable mais dont les conditions d’appropriation sont inégalement distribuées. Dans le domaine politique, le discours de l’ouverture à la diversité est déployé par des groupes — classes, nations, ethnies — différemment situés dans des rapports de pouvoir pour légitimer leurs propres pratiques et dévaloriser celles de groupes avec lesquels ils sont en tension.
