Abstract
Marqués par un style dépersonnalisé, mis au service d’un témoignage « objectif », voire désenchanté, les récits de voyage en Orient de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier se bornent pour la plupart à conforter l’ethnocentrisme occidental. Cela dit, sa représentation du Tonkin semble se distinguer par l’émergence d’une perspective décentrée, qui déplace le modèle français de civilité et sa valorisation vers la culture de l’Extrême-Orient. Le propos de cet article est d’examiner la dynamique et les enjeux d’un tel transfert culturel, et cela dans le contexte d’un voyage par procuration, dont la textualisation exige une légitimation particulière. Patente surtout dans la différence spécifique entre l’autoreprésentation du voyageur et la représentation de son frère, sa « source oculaire », cette légitimation sera analysée à travers le prisme du rapport entre l’honnêteté et la galanterie. L’article montrera, enfin, que la représentation idéalisée du Tonkin participe d’une perspective renversée, opposant au mercantilisme et à la « barbarie » occidentale un Orient civilisé, qui « s’humanise » dans ses rapports avec les autres.
