Abstract
Le présent article explore Frontières ou Tableaux d’Amérique à travers différentes « traversées de frontières » (spatiales, narratives, structurelles, sémantiques) du narrateur-promeneur audettien. Si la dualité de la frontière problématise toujours les questions identitaires du même et de l’altérité, Audet la désigne aussi, en l’articulant à l’idée du bonheur (essence même du « mythe de l’Amérique »), comme centre ironique de son architectonie romanesque. La marquant de surcroît d’un pluriel dès le titre, il représente la superbe hétérogénéité du continent et inscrit le changement du paradigme de frontière dans toute la production romanesque québécoise : il est, en effet, le premier romancier dont la « frontière » n’est plus figurée uniquement par l’Ouest (notamment par la Californie), mais qui, dans sa pluralité, esquisse la géographie fictive d’une nouvelle identité continentale, nécessairement impure et dialogique.
