Abstract
Aujourd’hui comme hier, une part importante des émigrants au départ de La Réunion est constituée d’élèves et d’étudiants, à destination de la métropole essentiellement. Le coût élevé induit par une scolarisation loin de l’île constitue pourtant un frein important à un tel départ, de sorte que ces émigrants sont réputés appartenir aux couches sociales les plus favorisées de l’île. Cela est souvent perçu comme un facteur discriminatoire car certaines filières d’enseignement ne peuvent être suivies à La Réunion. L’exploitation des données de l’enquête « Démo » nous permet d’évaluer dans quelle mesure ces émigrants sont issus des milieux aisés et si, à leur éventuel retour dans l’île, ils atteignent eux-mêmes un statut privilégié grâce au savoir acquis en métropole ou à l’étranger.
