DansLa distinction,Bourdieu montre que nos choix et jugements sont pour l’essentiel le reflet de notre position dans l’espace social et déterminés en grande partie par des habitus qui prennent sens à travers une stylisation de la vie et des pratiques distinctives entérinant la différenciation et la domination sociale. Dès1978, Bourdieu pose les bases d’une analyse du fait sportif dansComment peut-on être sportif ? Les membres des classes populaires choisissent et valorisent des sports qui intègrent l’esprit de sacrifice, la force, le mélange des corps, l’exaltation de la compétition, lorsque ceux des classes supérieures privilégient les sports, souvent instrumentés, l’esthétisme et l’absence de contact direct. Dans cet article, nous cherchons à démontrer comment l’ancrage paradigmatique et la dynamique heuristique du modèle bourdieusien méritent d’être critiqués et amendés en fonction des évolutions qui participent à transformer la société et ses horizons. L’instrumentalisation de la pratique du golf pour l’intégration sociale par des acteurs, initialement exclus de la distribution sociale traditionnelle de ce type d’activité élective, constitue une forme de revers de la distinction bourdieusienne, mais traduit également le degré d’ouverture accru des choix et des trajectoires possibles des acteurs au sein du système.
