This paper represents one component of a study into the use of variable fan nozzle area to reduce jet noise. It is focused on investigating the fan nozzle exit flow of several fan nozzle geometries using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. Four configurations of nozzle have been simulated with Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS). Effective area changes and turbulence levels are assessed and an estimate made of the sound pressure level spectrum at specific locations. The castellated fan nozzle is predicted to produce the lowest level of turbulent kinetic energy compared to the 45° and 60° chevron fan nozzles. This trend is also reflected by the acoustic analysis particularly at the lower frequencies.
