Abstract

Cet article vise à montrer, sur base d’un certain nombre d’exemples récents sélectionnés parmi d’autres possibles, qu’au-delà de la sécularisation que connaît l’Europe, le politique y recourt volontiers au religieux institué pour affronter diverses situations face auxquelles il se sent plus ou moins démuni. Cette instrumentalisation du religieux se fonde essentiellement sur trois caractéristiques de celui-ci : il est une ressource identitaire importante pour de nombreux pays ; longtemps seul référent éthique, il est encore aujourd’hui facilement regardé comme doté en la matière de compétences particulièrement significatives ; enfin, il offre tout un arsenal de rites, disponibles pour toutes les circonstances qui appellent l’une ou l’autre forme de célébration publique. De tels usages de « ressources » religieuses par le politique ne doivent toutefois pas conduire à parler d’un « retour du religieux » car c’est le plus souvent départi de ce qui en fait l’essence — une croyance en une transcendance — et en dehors de toute résurgence du pouvoir de régulation de ses autorités que ce religieux retrouve une place sur la scène publique.
