Abstract
A research project has been carried out at the University of Manitoba, Canada, to develop glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) poles with hollow cross-section. In order to keep fabrication and erection costs low, a method of construction was developed where two or more segments of a pole are connected using friction-fitted joints. This paper presents results from experimental work and numerical analyses of two-segment GFRP poles, with special attention given to the effect of the joint between the two segments on the static and dynamic behavior of the jointed poles. Both testing and finite element analyses showed that local buckling near the base was the governing failure mode, provided that the joint length is kept above a minimum value required to fully transfer the load between segments. The results from this study showed that a reliable joint length of the pole segments should be at least 1/10 of the larger segment length being connected.
