Abstract
Les quartiers centraux de Québec qui forment l’arrondissement de La Cité ont connu, après plusieurs décennies de pertes, un regain démographique appréciable entre 1996 et 2001. Le texte explore les tenants et aboutissants de cette renaissance : arrivée plus forte de jeunes adultes que de personnes âgées, croissance de l’emploi local dans les nouveaux secteurs de l’économie, revalorisation chez certains du genre de vie urbain et politiques publiques municipales favorables. Jusqu’ici, cette renaissance n’est pas associée à une forte gentrification. Elle n’est pas non plus unique à Québec car elle participe à une résurgence urbaine d’échelle mondiale. Pour toutes ces raisons, on pourrait penser que la renaissance de La Cité sera durable, c’est-à-dire qu’elle se maintiendra tout en mettant de l’avant des pratiques de développement urbain durable. Cependant, elle est encore trop récente pour que nous soyons catégoriques à cet égard.
