Preliminary results on the application of capillary electrochromatography to the analysis of domoic acid

Abstract
The feasibility of using capillary electrochromatography (CEC) with photodiode array detection for the analysis of domoic acid (DA), responsible for Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning (ASP), is presented. Factors influencing the separation performance have been investigated. Using a reverse phase column (C18) and a mobile phase consisting of 5 mM phosphate buffer (pH 2.5)–acetonitrile (40 : 60) with an applied voltage of 7 kV, the separation of domoic acid from other compounds in spiked uncontaminated razor clams was accomplished. These preliminary results show the promising potential of the technique as an alternative to HPLC or capillary electrophoresis (CE) for the analysis of such compounds in biological samples.
