Au fil des années, plusieurs chercheurs se sont intéressés au phénomène de la migration des jeunes. Quant aux décideurs, ils sont de plus en plus préoccupés par les impacts négatifs de ces mouvements migratoires sur le développement local et régional. Après avoir examiné quelques tendances démographiques saguenéennes, les auteurs utilisent l’analyse discriminante pour cerner les facteurs associés au désir d’enracinement d’un échantillon aléatoire de 1665 élèves du secondaire du Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. Les résultats montrent que les filles sont plus nombreuses à vouloir quitter leur région (34,9 pour cent, comparativement à 26,5 pour cent des garçons). De plus, la propension à partir est partagée dans les mêmes proportions par les répondants de tous les âges. L’analyse met en lumière l’importance du contexte culturel (scolarité du père et occupation de la mère notamment) pour la construction des préférences résidentielles des adolescents.
