Abstract
Le grand intérêt manifesté envers la question du vieillissement est un phénomène assez récent au Québec. La création récente de l'Association québécoise de gérontologie (1979), de la Fédération de l'âge d'or du Québec (1970) et de l'Association québécoise pour la défense des droits des retraités (1980) en sont quelques manifestations. Les colloques, les enquêtes et les recherches sur le troisième âge se succèdent à un rythme inégalé. Malgré cet engouement pour les problèmes du troisième âge, les principales théories psychosociales du viellissement demeurent toujours fort peu connues dans notre milieu. Le présent article vise à initier le lecteur à certaines de ces théories et à l'informer sur l'évolution de la recherche en ce domaine depuis quelques années. Un regard sur les premières théories psychosociales du vieillissement, qui apparaissent au début des années soixante, nous révèle que celles-ci ont été constituées à une époque où l'analyse fonctionnaliste marquait de son empreinte chacune des sciences sociales.
