Abstract
Au pouvoir depuis son accession à l’indépendance en 1991, le régime ouzbek a largement investi, pour le réinterpréter, le répertoire du passé et de la tradition. Si le contexte de l’époque, celui de la création du nouvel État, a pu l’expliquer, la distance temporelle avec cet événement fondateur rend de plus en plus criant le hiatus entre un imaginaire national quasi-exclusivement inspiré d’une mémoire réinventée et le quotidien des Ouzbeks. Pourtant le pouvoir peine à articuler discours et action publique avec une modernité qui ouvrirait les perspectives tangibles de l’avenir promis. Le programme de réaménagement des centres urbains du pays vise à articuler au passé une modernité mais cette relation reste problématique dans la mesure où le pouvoir dépend d’un statu quo social où les inégalités se creusent. Le passé est alors à nouveau convoqué pour le justifier et toute idée de progrès social est évacuée.
