Abstract
Les Européens ont conféré leur concept traditionnel de l'« autre » aux autochtones. En réalité, les Européens étaient des étrangers pour les Amérindiens. Les intrus français furent perçus par les indigènes d'une façon peu flatteuse et cette perception remettait largement en question les prétentions européennes sur la supériorité du caractère, de la culture et de la technologie des Blancs. Les réactions négatives des autochtones, particulièrement celles des femmes, aux tentatives d'acculturation des missionnaires catholiques français peuvent servir à illustrer la grande richesse culturelle et spirituelle des sociétés amérindiennes. Même s'ils acceptaient avec précaution les biens des Européens, les autochtones n'étaient quand même pas prêts à embrasser les valeurs spirituelles et les croyances de l'« autre ».
