Abstract
Lors des inondations de juillet 1996, plusieurs familles ont tout perdu : maison, terrain et biens personnels. Cette situation perturbante a forcé plusieurs sinistrés à faire le deuil de leur ancienne demeure. La recension des écrits a permis de relever que des individus développent des sentiments profonds face à leur habitat et que la destruction de ce dernier peut provoquer un état de désorganisation chez certains individus tout comme l'apparition de sentiments négatifs mettant en péril leur état de santé psychologique. Dans le but d'identifier les conséquences des inondations de juillet 1996 sur la conception du chez-soi et la santé mentale des sinistrés, une étude exploratoire de type qualitatif (entrevues en profondeur) a été réalisée à l'hiver 1998 auprès de 69 sujets ayant perdu tous leurs biens lors des pluies diluviennes. Les données recueillies auprès des sinistrés confirment ce qui a été soulevé dans les écrits scientifiques : plusieurs individus ont été profondément marqués par le sinistre de juillet 1996 tant sur le plan de la conception du chez-soi que de la santé biopsychosociale. Deux ans après les inondations, la nostalgie et la déception pèsent lourd, car la presque totalité des individus ont été incapables de retrouver un nouveau chez-soi qui les habite.
