Des mesures faites au printemps 1981 pour connaître le volume et le poids des sédiments fins contenus dans le couvert de glace de la baie de Montmagny, côte sud du moyen estuaire du Saint-Laurent, révèlent le rôle important des glaces comme agent de transport des sédiments fins. La superficie du couvert de glace étant de 20 km2 et l’épaisseur moyenne des sédiments fins dans la glace de 10 cm, la charge totale serait de 4 millions de tonnes. On estime qu’environ 10 à 15% de cette charge est restituée directement à la zone intertidale durant le déglacement. Des 85 à 90% qui reste, près de la moitié serait restituée à la zone de turbidité du moyen estuaire alors que l’autre moitié serait effectivement exportée par les glaces vers l’estuaire maritime.
