Abstract
Comment le quotidien montréalais Le Devoir, dont la rentabilité commerciale n’était pas l’objectif, a-t-il pu survivre depuis 1910 dans des conditions qui, apparemment, lui étaient hostiles ? Les dirigeants du journal ont dû chercher à compenser les insuffisances du marché en sollicitant des bailleurs de fonds et d’autres fournisseurs de ressources pour qui le profit n’était pas la motivation première. L’analyse des rapports financiers du Devoir, des débuts du journal jusqu’à nos jours, permet de déterminer dans quelle mesure les activités du journal ont été déficitaires ou profitables et quand, où et dans quelles circonstances les responsables du journal ont trouvé les ressources matérielles nécessaires à sa survie.
