Abstract
La période dite de la « royauté unifiée » en Israël pose de plus en plus de problèmes aux exégètes, aux historiens et aux archéologues. Les débats sont houleux, les positions contradictoires, les arguments évoqués sont utilisés pour soutenir des thèses diamétralement opposées. Le présent article veut présenter quelques données tirées principalement des débats qui ont cours dans le domaine de l’archéologie, qu’il s’agisse du recours à la poterie, au Carbone 14 ou aux inscriptions, entre autres, pour illustrer les tensions qui existent entre les chercheurs, et les difficultés rencontrées quand vient le temps de tenter de présenter un consensus qui rallierait la majorité. L’impasse observée invite à considérer peut-être l’option de s’imposer un moratoire sur les études qui tentent d’établir des liens entre textes bibliques et archéologie.
