A new magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence control methodology is proposed, in which the applied stationary magnetic field is not simply aligned along the streamwise or transverse flow direction, but along a direction that forms an angle within the range of 0° (i.e. streamwise flow direction) to 90° (transverse flow direction) to the main fluid flow. For planar Poiseuille flow, the magnitude of this angle is optimized by using the smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) methodology. The best results in what concerns turbulence control are obtained when this angle falls in the range of 20° to 50°, for the cases studied, which consider an electrically conducting flow of Reynolds number 104 with an electrical conductivity of σ = 1.0×106 (Ω m)−1, and an applied magnetic field B = 0.2 Tesla, there is no onset of turbulence up to the end of the simulation time (6.79 s).
