La retraite est souvent associée à plusieurs bouleversements au sein des couples aînés allant du départ des enfants du foyer familial à la redéfinition des rôles des conjoints. Bien qu’un nombre grandissant d’études auprès des couples aînés soit dénombré, la recension des écrits met en évidence le peu d’information concernant le fonctionnement conjugal et sexuel des couples aînés vivant à domicile. Le but principal de la présente étude est de rapporter des résultats d’une enquête sur le fonctionnement conjugal et sexuel des couples aînés vivant à domicile. Cette première partie de l’étude aborde transversalement et longitudinalement le lien entre le fonctionnement conjugal, la détresse psychologique et la fonction sexuelle. Cette enquête fut effectuée auprès de 508 couples vivant à domicile, mais les données rapportées dans le présent article portent sur 394 couples aînés représentatifs de la population francophone du Québec qui ont participé aux deux moments de l’évaluation répartis sur un intervalle de 18 mois. Les résultats permettent de voir que les couples aînés présentent dans l’ensemble un bon niveau de fonctionnement conjugal et un faible niveau de détresse psychologique. Malgré une perception moyenne positive du fonctionnement conjugal, une proportion significative d’aînés présente une détresse conjugale importante. Un lien transversal et longitudinal est observé entre le fonctionnement conjugal et le fonctionnement psychologique. La deuxième partie de cette étude, présentée dans un second article, décrit en détail le fonctionnement sexuel des couples aînés vivant à domicile au Québec. Des conclusions générales sur les résultats de cette enquête sont rapportées dans le deuxième article notamment sur l’importance de développer et d’évaluer des instruments de mesure et des interventions conjugales appropriées aux aînés. Retirement is often associated with major changes in the lives of elderly couples, ranging from children leaving home to redefining spousal roles. Although there are a growing number of studies on aging couples, the literature review provides little information on the marital and sexual functioning of elderly couples living at home. The main purpose of this study is to report on the results of a survey on marital and sexual functioning of elderly couples living at home. This first part of the study transversally and longitudinally discusses the link between marital functioning, psychological distress and sexual function. This survey was carried out with 508 couples living at home, but the data reported in this article on 394 elderly couples, representative of the French population in Quebec, who took part at two times during the evaluation over a period of 18 months. The results show that elderly couples overall have a good level of marital functioning and a low level of psychological distress. In spite of a positive average perception of marital functioning, a significant proportion of seniors experience serious marital distress. There is a transversal and longitudinal link between marital functioning and psychological functioning. Part two of this study, presented in the second article, describes in detail the sexual functioning of elderly couples living in Quebec. General conclusions on this survey's results are reported in the second article, particularly regarding the importance of developing and evaluating the appropriate methods of assessment and marital interventions for older couples.
