Esther Bick a développé une méthode d’observation psychanalytique de bébés pour permettre aux psychothérapeutes d’enfants et d’adultes de s’approcher des vécus infantiles qui perdurent au cours de la vie. L’auteur expose les trois temps de cette méthode, essentiels pour saisir l’ampleur de l’impact de l’expérience émotionnelle pour l’observateur : la période d’observation elle-même, la notation et la discussion des compte-rendus en petit groupe. Il propose ses réflexions quant à l’apport d’un tel travail dans la formation des psychothérapeutes, notamment les réactions à la douleur psychique et l’identification au bébé et à ses parents durant ce processus. Inspiré par les travaux de Bick et de Bion, l’auteur aborde aussi les points théoriques ayant trait à la constitution de la « peau psychique » et aux angoisses primitives, en se concentrant sur l’importance de la fonction contenante dans le traitement par la cure analytique.
