Abstract
Women of New France are often portrayed as being "privileged" in comparison with their colonial English counterparts or with their female descendants living under the British regime. Widows, especially, are frequently used to illustrate what possibilities the law permitted for these women who were free from male supervision. However, despite the myth of it being a golden age for women, women who really exercised power in New France were the exception, not the rule. A study of rural seigneurial widows in pre-industrial Quebec demonstrates that they quickly tended to become "mothers of seigneurs" rather than "seigneuresses." The more entrepreneurial widows, who retained seigneurial power over a long period of time, were in the minority. The "seigneuresse" Marie-Catherine Peuvret is one such exemplary case that raises a number of questions and avenues of enquiry about the social and economic power of women in the patriarchal society of Canada's eighteenth century.
