Cet article porte sur l'évaluation de programmes éducatifs préscolaires dont l'objectif est de favoriser le succès scolaire et social des enfants issus de milieux défavorisés. À cette fin, les auteurs décrivent l'évolution d'enfants qui ont participé à de tels programmes, identifient les facteurs associés au succès scolaire relatifs aux compétences cognitives et socioaffectives; ils comparent à la fin de la maternelle le succès scolaire d'enfants qui ont bénéficié d'un programme d'éducation préscolaire intensif précoce à celui d'enfants qui ont uniquement reçu un service tardif à temps plein. Les variables considérées sont le groupe d'appartenance sexuelle, l'âge et l'évolution (prétest/post-test). Les conclusions concernent surtout la durée que devrait avoir un tel programme pour donner les résultats escomptés.
