Abstract
Résumé Le récent sommet des Amériques de Québec laisse présager la constitution d’une vaste zone de libre échange panaméricaine à l’horizon de 2005. Pour autant les pays d’Amérique latine et des Caraïbes sont, d’une part, très divers, et, d’autre part, traversés par des tensions internes que la pauvreté, les inégalités sociales ou ethniques, les questions liées aux identités culturelles ou religieuses entretiennent. Dans un espace conquis par les procédures démocratiques et dans le contexte d’un modèle libéral de développement économique, les pays d’Amérique latine s’engagent dans des processus d’intégration multiples et parfois concurrents. L’ALENA d’un côté et le Mercosur de l’autre dessinent une alternative pour l’avenir d’un sous-continent, qui sera aussi en première ligne pour le traitement des grandes questions « globales » : développement durable, identités culturelles...
