Abstract
Quinze ans après sa victoire sur Hannibal, Rome est bouleversée par ce qu’on a appelé « l’affaire des Bacchanales ». Tirant parti d’informations privées concernant un scandale familial, le consul Postumius parvint à convaincre le Sénat de consacrer toute une année (186 av. J.-C.) à la lutte contre ce « fléau ». Accusés de constituer « un second peuple dans Rome », de se livrer à des comportements contre nature, sous la conduite de « mères » initiatrices, et par-dessus tout d’organiser des associations échappant au contrôle de l’État romain, les adeptes des Bacchanales furent impitoyablement pourchassés à Rome et dans toute l’Italie. Cet article discute la vraie nature du mouvement et le degré réel des fantasmes qui ont nourri une persécution conduite pour des motifs aussi bien privés que publics, et qui visait à restaurer l’ordre traditionnel au sein de l’État comme de la famille.
