Abstract
The strongly comic flavor of David Elias's Sunday Afternoon, particularly the ubiquitous sexuality and the outrageously coincidental resolution, has frequently prevented readers from seeing the psychological and religious depth of the novel. Like Elias's earlier short story collections, this novel develops its themes through border crossings: the literal border between Canada and the U.S.; the literary border between decorous obedience to genre distinctions and a disorienting mixture of realism and myth; the traditional border between conservative Mennonite isolation and worldly intrusions; the moral border between decency and violence; and the emotional border between respect and abuse. Using Miroslav Volts Exclusion and Embrace: A Theological Exploration of Identity, Otherness, and Reconciliation, this paper argues that Elias's hilarious boundary transgressions are an essential part of his vision of redemptive hope, even for Neustadt, a most exclusionary Mennonite village.
