Abstract
Résumé A partir d’une enquête ethnographique et mythologique, cette recherche analyse le plus grand centre commercial du monde, le West Edmonton Mall (WEM) en Alberta au Canada (centre en outre fondé sur le principe du fun shopping ), à l’aune des paradigmes de la modernité et de l’hypermodernité. Au-delà de l’instabilité théorique des corpus mobilisés, il en ressort in concreto , d’une part, une difficulté à rendre compte du WEM par l’un ou l’autre de ces modèles, au profit d’une hybridité théorique d’ailleurs élargie à la postmodernité et, d’autre part, l’esquisse d’un cadre d’analyse proche de celui de "modernité populaire" suggéré par Carroll (2000), l’hypomodernité ou modernité réinitialisée et redimensionnée à l’échelle micro-sociale.
