L’auteur examine — notamment à partir de cas d’adolescents et de jeunes adultes en rééducation — les principaux facteurs qui influencent la construction de la langue mathématique. Bien que certains facteurs puissent se combiner entre eux, il en distingue six : la perception de la quantité, l’état de l’affectivité, la qualité de la langue maternelle, le niveau de raisonnement, la mobilité des opérations actives et la connaissance du sens des éléments nécessaires à la représentation idéogrammique ou figurative. L’auteur dégage en conclusion les leçons que la rééducation pourrait apporter à la pédagogie.
