Abstract
Depuis leSound Pattern of English, la phonologie générative est devenue le modèle dominant. Pourtant, les travaux générativistes récents sont parfois très éloignés de ce qui a pu caractériser l’époque SPE. En même temps, certains concepts, idées, problèmes continuent à traverser les travaux des phonologues, et savoir s’il y a rupture ou continuité est une question difficile et controversée. Nous pensons que la phonologie est une discipline cumulative et offrons ici un panorama historique et critique. La montée du concept de contrainte, désormais central en phonologie, est expliquée, illustrée et évaluée à partir de deux modèles : la TCSR (Théorie des contraintes et stratégies de réparation) et la TO (Théorie de l’optimalité).
