Abstract
Parce que la psychiatrie, comme toute médecine, est un art, l’évolution de ses hypothèses et de ses connaissances est tributaire de son inscription dans un contexte social intégrant des jeux de pouvoir et de compétence. Depuis une quinzaine d’années, alors que la psychiatrie publique voit son domaine de compétence s’élargir à de nouvelles populations ou problématiques, les représentations professionnelles ne vont pas dans le sens d’une identification des causalités sociales du trouble mental, mais d’incertitudes cliniques associées à un décloisonnement des champs du travail sanitaire et social. Cependant, les figures contemporaines du social faisant partie intégrantes de telles représentations se complexifient incontestablement tout en témoignant de la persistance d’une culture désireuse de maintenir, par une exigence de réforme juridique et politique, l’écart entre la matérialité du social et ses incarnations symboliques.
