Abstract
Doomed by its roots, the poor sunflower cannot break free from these chains, but only watch helplessly as the things of life pass over. The source of the light (indeed what gives the plant its name) is beyond comprehension, but is so attractive that the flower must not turn its face away. Trapped in a cycle, therefore, the plant must perform this instinctive, repetitive act for the rest of its life, rather than breaking free from its pre-design to fly into the area of free thought and action. To Blake, the act of rationalization (of which the concept of time was a shining example) and the cold Platonic dichotomy of mind and body did more to destroy meaning in the world than anything else.
