Abstract
L'établissement de la ville de Québec en 1608 contribua directement à la fondation de la Nouvelle-Orléans un siècle plus tard. Elles devinrent toutes deux, les principaux centres de vastes hinterlands avant de céder le pas à des villes mieux situées par rapport à la technologie du moment. À mesure que leur importance relative diminuait, leurs quartiers historiques, le Vieux-Carré et le Vieux-Québec, furent de plus en plus délaissés. Aujourd'hui, soucieux de la conservation du patrimoine, on cherche à faire revivre ces vestiges urbains de l'Amérique française. Les résultats ne sont pas toujours très heureux. Le Vieux-Québec demeure le symbole d'un passé, d'un présent et d'une culture vivante, mais pour combien de temps? Le Vieux-Carré constitue un bel exemple de l'appropriation de la culture pour des fins commerciales.
