Researchers responded to the findings of the paper entitled 'Critical Growth Temperature of Aqueous CdTe Quantum Dots (QD) is Non-negligible for their Application as Nanothermometers'. This study was motivated by earlier published article in Small entitled 'CdTe Quantum Dots as Nano-thermometers: Towards Highly Sensitive Thermal Imaging'. The authors reported that the thermal sensitivity of the CdTe QDs that they synthesized was size-independent for three different capping agents. New QDs were ordered from Plasmachem Inc., and the thermal sensitivity of QDs of different sizes was measured to explain the differences. A linear relationship between the emission wavelength and size was obtained for QDs of size 4.7 and 3.8 nm. Researchers responded that the inner lattice expansion/contraction of QDs was a key factor in determining their characteristic thermal sensitivity, which was modified by the presence of strong and directional surface forces caused by the different capping agents.
