Abstract In this review a modified view of the Singer‐Nicholson model, termed the triple layer model, is presented. Structural and dynamic studies of lipid bilayers have demonstrated that the two interface regions of a membrane are more rigid and less dynamic than the inner hydrocarbon region. The results from these studies are gathered in this paper to support the notion of modifying the viewpoint of the fluid mosaic model. The idea of lipid bilayers consisting of three distinct and functional layers has interesting implications. We speculate on how the triple layer model pertains to both the mechanical properties of membranes and its biological relevance.
