Abstract

F− off: Fluoroolefins bridging a pair of iridium centers are susceptible to abstraction of a fluoride ion while those bound to a single metal center are not. The resulting bridging fluorovinyl groups also undergo fluoride abstraction to yield the corresponding vinylidenes, whereas terminal fluorovinyl groups are unreactive. Selective replacement of one fluorine substituent by either hydrogen or a methyl group can be effected (see scheme, Tf=trifluoromethanesulfonyl).
